Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Dar es Salaam

You arrive in Tanzania, where a driver picks you up at Dar es Salaam International Airport and brings you to your hotel where you will spend the first night. Dar es Salaam is Tanzania’s former capital, her largest city and main port. The distinctly African colorful markets are well worth a visit and both German and British influences can still be seen in the architecture around the city.

Day 2-3

Nyerere National Park

You are picked up by your personal safari guide from your accommodation and drive in about 6-8 hours to Selous National Park. At the gate your guide will handle the paperwork and you drive on to your accommodation, with a safari ‘en route’. Formerly the northern part of the Selous Game Reserve, Tanzania’s Nyerere National Park is Africa’s largest national park. Stretching over an impressive 30.893 km2, the park is home to some of the world’s largest concentrations of wildlife, and the incredible diversity and sheer volume of animals draw visitors from around the globe.

Travelers can look forward to spotting a large collection of common and rare species including the famous Big Five, some rare species of antelopes like the Roan Antelope, and a large concentration of elephants and hippos. Don’t miss the opportunity to take a boating safari on the exquisite Rufiji River, spot the endangered African wild dog, and enjoy a guided walking safari with a highly knowledgeable guide.

Each day you will consult with your guide about the schedule for the day, for example, additional early game drives with a beautiful sunrise, or rather a game drive in the late afternoon. You can also go out for the whole day and take a nice picnic lunch with you.

Day 4-5

Mikumi National Park

After breakfast you will leave for Mikumi National Park, a beautiful but long drive of approximately 7 hours. From the gate you will drive to your accommodation. When you are lucky there will be still time for a short game drive on the way there. Situated just 300 km away from the capital, Mikumi is Tanzania’s fourth largest and one of its most accessible national parks, composed of low-lying wetlands flanked by mountains on either side. A diverse menagerie of wildlife exists within the park’s 3.230 km2 area, including lions, buffalos, buck, civets, crocodiles, snakes, lizards, hippos, zebras and even packs of wild dogs, seldom seen in other parts of the continent.

The floodplain also supports over 400 species of birds, both resident and migratory species. Visitors can look forward to a variety of activities including wildlife viewing, bird watching, visiting the educational and research center, and viewing the massive collection of baobabs near Mbuyuni.

Day 6-8

Ruaha National Park

You will drive to Ruaha National Park; this will take approximately 6 hours. Ruaha is one Tanzania’s big national parks in the southwestern part and the second largest on the African continent. It is also Tanzania’s largest elephant haven and home to a profusion of bird species, including kingfishers, plovers, egrets, hornbills and sunbirds. Crocodiles and hippos thrive in the Great Ruaha River, which flows along the sanctuary’s eastern border, and in the dry season between July and November, animals flock to the last remaining water sources, presenting an exceptional wildlife spectacle.

Day 9-13

Zanzibar

After breakfast you will drive to the Ruaha Airstrip in the national park. Here you will say goodbye to your guide and fly to the tropical island Zanzibar. At your arrival, a driver will wait for you at the airport and take you to your hotel. The magnificent island of Zanzibar lies off the east coast of Tanzania, with pearl white beaches, a clear blue sea and pleasant temperatures that fluctuate between 25 and 35 degrees Celsius.

Zanzibar has many things to offer besides sun, sea and beaches. Stone Town is the historical capital. Walk through the meandering alleys and visit the noisy bazaars, the Old Fort and the site of the former slave market. The Spice Tour is a great way of exploring the famous spice plantations on Zanzibar. The Prison Island boat trip will take you to the island that was formerly used for the detention of slaves. Today, Prison Island is home to the Giant tortoise.

Take a Dhow Cruise to sail through the beautiful turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean on a traditional wooden dhow. The Dolphin Tour will take you to the Kizimkazi fishing village, home to several schools of dolphins. Zanzibar is known for its marvelous coral reefs and its amazing sea life and offers unparalleled opportunities for scuba diving and snorkeling. For those who want to remain active, Zanzibar has much more to offer. Your accommodation can organize activities on location.
