Day 1
Moshi – Kilimanjaro
Welcome in Tanzania. A driver will pick you up from Kilimanjaro International Airport and bring you to Moshi where you will spend the first night. The majestic snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro towers over this little African town which is known as a coffee producing hub boasting vast coffee plantations.
Day 2
West Kilimanjaro
In the morning after breakfast, you will be picked up from your accommodation and head for the Amini Africa Maasai Lodge in West-Kilimanjaro, which is home to the Maasai people. West Kilimanjaro is a concession area located north of Mount Meru in northeastern Tanzania. This remote, off-the-beaten-track destination combines the experience of Maasai culture and private wildlife game viewing in a spectacularly scenic environment. It is the best place to get to know the Maasai and their traditions and rituals, while you are slowing down your own life pace.
It is all about being together, about traditions, stories and learning from each other. Upon arrival you will receive a warm welcome by the Maasai community who will then guide you through the day. After settling down, a ‘Maasai hut’ lunch will be served in a cozy restaurant. The afternoon can be spent with leisure at the swimming pool with amazing views over Maasai land – or you can go on a ‘nature walk’. Your Maasai guide will explain to you everything about the environment, the Maasai life, their hunting techniques and natural medicine.
At night, you will dine on roasted goat by the fire – or enjoy another great dish, as you prefer. Once you are settled between the sheets in a comfortable Maasai hut, you can let your thoughts wander and dream about the amazing new world that is yours to share for a while.
Day 3
Lake Manyara National Park
Today is the start of your safari! You will be picked up by your personal safari guide from your accommodation and will drive to Lake Manyara National Park which takes about 3,5 hours. Once you have arrived at the park gate your guide will handle the paperwork and your safari can begin.
Lake Manyara National Park offers a mosaic of vegetation habitats which can sustain a high density of wildlife. Its ground water forest prevents the soil from eroding, as it is acting like a giant filtering sponge which gradually releases water so it can flow gently into streams instead of running off. The park is diverse with both wildlife and vegetation. With its location at the base of the east African rift valley, it offers a spectacular view of the escarpment. Lake Manyara is one of those national parks which offers rich and diverse game viewing within a reasonably small area.
It is one of the best areas for elephant viewing and close encounters are very common. The bird life is also exceptional.
Day 4-6
Serengeti National Park
After breakfast you will depart for the beautiful Serengeti National Park. An adventurous and bumpy road will take you there in about 4-5 hours. When time allows you will have a game drive in the afternoon before heading for your accommodation.
Serengeti National Park covers an area of 14.800 km2 and derives its name from the Maasai word ´Siringitu´, which means endless plain. The Serengeti is located along the rift valley and is abound with geological formations. One of Serengeti’s defining features are its round Kopjes (pronounced copies), a feature of continual weathering. These islands in the sea of grass are formed as the topsoil comprising of rock and ash is eroded, exposing a covered layer of metamorphic rock. They became round as a result of spherical wind weathering. The game drives in this park are exceptional and game viewing incredible. This Park offers the best opportunity for viewing cheetah, leopards and lions.
Serengeti is also famous for the Great Migration. In terms of numbers and drama, this is by far the most amazing natural spectacle you will ever see, coming face to face with thousands of wildebeest and zebras on their epic annual trek. Although there is no telling what exactly will happen in nature, we can advise you where you are most likely to catch a glimpse of this extraordinary phenomenon.
While spending these days in Serengeti National Park, you can do unlimited game drives between 06.00am and 06.00pm. This means you can start with an early breakfast, take a lunchbox, and come back to the camp in the later afternoon. Or you make an early morning game drive and come back to the camp for a so called ‘hot lunch’. Your guide will help you with the planning and the logistics. You just need to let him know your wishes and together you can plan for the day (usually done together with your guide the previous night).
Day 7-8
Ngorongoro Region, Ngorongoro Crater
In the morning there will be still some time to enjoy Serengeti National Park as you will leave at around 11.00 am to drive to Karatu, a village close to Ngorongoro Crater. The bumpy drive will take about 4-5 hours and you will pass the Ngorongoro viewpoint on the way.
The next morning you will drive into the Ngorongoro Crater. It is advisable to leave early to catch the nice morning light and before it gets too crowded. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is best known for its archaeological and geological significance, rich wildlife, and beautiful scenery. The conservation area encompasses the famous Crater, the renowned Olduvai Gorge and vast plains of grasslands, forests and mountains extending to the Serengeti. This 8.000 km2 protected area is recognized for its natural beauty and was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Visitors flock here to soak up the spectacular views of the Ngorongoro Crater, voted as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa and famed for its natural beauty and abundant wildlife.
The crater is one of the prime areas to observe the black-maned lion and the endangered Black Rhino, of which there are not that many left in the crater. You will spend the whole day ‘on safari’ in the park looking for amazing wildlife. Your guide will bring a picnic lunch to enjoy. At the end of the day, you drive out of the crater and return to your accommodation.
Day 9-13
Zanzibar
After breakfast you will drive from Karatu to Arusha Airport which will take about 3-4 hours. Here you will say goodbye to your guide and fly to the tropical island Zanzibar. The flight will take about 1,5 hours. The magnificent island of Zanzibar is an island off the east coast of Tanzania, which has pearl white beaches, a clear blue sea and pleasant temperatures that fluctuate between 25 and 35 degrees Celsius.
At your arrival in Zanzibar, a driver is waiting for you at the airport and will bring you to your hotel. Zanzibar has many things to offer besides sun, sea and beaches. Stone Town is the historical capital. Walk through the meandering alleys and visit the noisy bazaars, the Old Fort, and the site of the former slave market. The Spice Tour is a great way of exploring the famous spice plantations of Zanzibar. The Prison Island boat trip will take you to the island that was formerly used for the detention of slaves. Today, Prison Island is home to the giant tortoise.
Take a Dhow Cruise to sail through the beautiful turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean on a traditional wooden dhow. The Dolphin Tour will take you to the Kizimkazi fishing village, home to several schools of dolphins. Zanzibar is known for its marvelous coral reefs and its amazing sea life and offers unparalleled opportunities for scuba diving and snorkeling. For those who want to remain active, Zanzibar has many more things to offer. Your accommodation can organize activities on location for you.
